Back in Business!

Just a short note that I got the new computer up and working. So we're back in business and already rendering on the Mynxie set. So hopefully will be done by Xmas, but admittedly it's gonna be tight. Keep your fingers crossed for me! New system is a bit better, same quad core with threading but overclocked so getting a bit better performance. Fuckton more memory. GTX1070 that won't do shit for rendering, but will make preview interface run smooth as silk. And of course, my first run-in with Windows 10. Got my first experience with auto-update reboot. Just wow. Who thought that was a good idea? Completely understanding the grief and hatred for 10 now. Went straight to teh intrawebz to find a work-around to disable that. Would have completely shut me down if I couldn't do overnight renders cuz my system decides to restart every chance it got. Fucking insane. But it's all good now!

You really should be back in business. Its the age of 3D porn and Patron. You are good at it and still got a fan base.

Thanks for the update.

Mynxie's not my favorite, but I have to applaud the sheer multitude of ideas you've had for her. What have we had so far? Male elf, Santa, reindeer, a striptease with a wine bottle, snowmen, Amilee, gingerbread men, a toy soldier, a polar bear... gal gets around. I have to wonder what'll be next. Scrooge? Elsa? Krampus? Father Time? Superman (heh)? I guess there's a few more left...

I'm trying to figure this shit out myself, but isn't GPU rendering a fuck ton faster than CPU rendering? I'm getting a similar system soon, so I wanted to figure out what parts to get.

Referring to this article:
http://blog.boxx.com/2014/10/02/gpu-rendering-vs-cpu-rendering-a-method-to-compare-render-times-with-empirical-benchmarks/
It oddly doesn't mention the model of the CPU OR the GPU, but GPU rendering was 6.2x faster to achieve the same image quality. Trying to figure out if I should sink more money into the CPU or the GPU.

PS, is overclocking for long periods of time healthy for your rig? I'm assuming you're going to be rendering while overclocked quite often.

@Leonard - Yup, GPU rendering is currently much better. But the Poser Firefly engine only does CPU rendering, and I'm too lazy to switch to a different engine. Don't want to completely relearn a new shader system.

But if you are getting a rendering system, I'd definitely recommend focusing on GPU, and of course a shitton of memory for heavily populated scenes.

Nice to hear you can do work again :)
Also if Win10 gets too ugly, consider switching to Ubuntu. Thats my next move when Win7 wont be supported anymore.
There are versions that are quite the same as windows, like Xubuntu. It can be adjusted so it lookes nearly as Win7 so you find everything you need, and the handling is pretty easy as well.
AAAAAAND it runs way faster then Win10, especially while rendering
